Judgment without Mercy

Principle: God’s judgments often mirror the judgments of a man or a nation toward others.

25   With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful;

With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;

26   With the pure You will show Yourself pure;

And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.

27   For You will save the humble people,

But will bring down haughty looks. (Psalms 18:25-27).

God in His Providence had exalted Esther to be the queen to King Ahasuerus who ruled the Persian and Medes Empire after the fall of Babylon.  Haman was the king’s chief executive and he hated a Jew by the name of Mordecai.  Haman built a gallows fifty cubits high to hang Mordecai on.  Since his hatred for Jews was inspired by Satan, he had the king approve a plan to kill all the Jews throughout the Persian Empire.

Haman did not know that Esther was a Jew and that God had brought her to her position as queen to influence the king to save the Jews.  The judgment that Haman had planned for Mordecai and the Jews was reversed and he himself was judged by his own decree.

14 Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high, and in the morning suggest to the king that Mordecai be hanged on it; then go merrily with the king to the banquet.”

And the thing pleased Haman; so he had the gallows made (Esther 5:14).

As the word left the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face. 9 Now Harbonah, one of the eunuchs, said to the king, “Look! The gallows, fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai, who spoke good on the king’s behalf, is standing at the house of Haman.”

Then the king said, “Hang him on it!”

10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath subsided (Esther 7:8-10).

23 So the Jews accepted the custom which they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them, 24 because Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to annihilate them, and had cast Pur (that is, the lot), to consume them and destroy them; 25 but when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letter that this wicked plot which Haman had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.(Esther 9:23-25, emphasis mine).

The proud Haman exalted himself and showed no mercy to Mordecai.  Mordecai walked humbly with God and showed mercy to others. God showed mercy on the humble man and judged the proud Haman with the very judgment he had devised against Mordecai.  His judgment without mercy, “return on his own head.”

“Judge  not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Matthew 7:1-2)

There are many in America who like Haman hate those who love God and the Bible.  They secretly plot in their positions of power to undermine conservative Christian values and silence their voice.  Some are in the media, some are in our universities, some are in the television industry, and some are in powerful positions in our government.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, there are many in positions of great influence that want to limit those who derive their moral values from the Bible.  Your Word has shaped our view of every moral, social, and political issue.  We are mocked because we believe that God established marriage as a union between a man and a woman.  We are accused of hate because we love the unborn child.  We are laughed at because we believe that sex is reserved for marriage. Lord, please preserve your children that are despised because they judge the Bible to be your revelation of Truth and moral conduct.  Lord may we be merciful to those who persecute us and trust our nation to your merciful hands.
